We are an AKC approved hospital for freezing and storage of canine semen.
We require a copy of the dogs registration papers, DNA papers, Brucellosis result, Microchip/Tattoo for identification, and Suburbia North Semen forms which are available for download under the "Clinic Forms" tab.
So, you think you want to have semen frozen and stored on your dog. Things you need to know to make it a success! 1. Teach your dog “how to do it”. We are constantly amazed how many dogs are brought to us to have a "collect and freeze" that have never been “collected” before. Just because your dog has bred naturally before, does not mean he will be able to do it “artificially”. Even if the dog is nice they can become scared and even aggressive when we have to handle their penis. 2. Semen count and quality are much better at younger ages. So if you have a champion stud, freeze his semen now! 3. Don’t wait until the dog is being shipped to the new owner in Hong Kong on Friday to decide this has to be done NOW. Most dogs do better with a “teaser” bitch, and we don’t always have one available. If you have intact girls, plan the freeze when one of them is in standing season or borrow one from a friend. 4. Please don’t wait until your dog is old, and/or sick, to decide to do this. 5. If you even THINK you might want your dog collected and his semen frozen, don’t scream at him for “humping”. Or, if it is too late for that, he may have to come for lessons before the actual freeze process is attempted. 6. If your dog is not easy to collect, we will ask you to leave him for the day. Some dogs have had to stay here a couple of days to calm down enough to cooperate with us. We actually have to spend more time with a “failure” than a success. 7. The amount of “breedings” depends on the quality of the semen that we get from your dog. Generally speaking, the older the dog is, the fewer number of breedings you will get. Also, the smaller the breed, the fewer number of breedings. And, of course, the less trained your dog is, the fewer breedings you will get. The dogs really need to feel comfortable doing this. 8. The freezing process we use are pellets placed into vials. Each vial contains approximately 1 million live, normal sperm, and equals one breeding. You cannot compare “straws” to vials without knowing semen morphology. It depends on the morphology and post thaw recovery to know how many straws are used for each breeding.
We are very proud of the quality of the semen we freeze. Please help us to help your dog!
